Marine Fuel Additives, Not Just for Storage

Snake Oil. Mouse Milk. Pixie dust. You guessed it, I’m talking about fuel additives. There may have been a time that these descriptions were accurate and the fuels that we were burning really didn’t need an additive package, but with the fuels we purchase today, that is no longer the case. The move to more environmentally friendly fuels presents today’s boater with a whole new series of issues well beyond simply adding a stabilizer when putting the boat away for the winter.

Carbon build-up, thermal oxidation, and water accumulation are the primary issues faced by gasoline boaters. These issues contribute to difficulty starting, poor acceleration, and increased fuel consumption — all of which can be easily avoided with the proactive use of a comprehensive gasoline treatment such as Biobor EB.

“Biobor EB uses an industry proven detergent package combined with a water dispersant, corrosion inhibitor, and concentrated stabilizer to address the full range of fuel problems boaters are faced with whether they are using E10 or conventional gasoline,” says Caleb Kaker of Hammonds Fuel Additives. “By treating fuel year-round with Biobor EB, boaters can rest assured that when they get on the water, whether after a brief layup period or prolonged off-season storage, that their marine engine will run smoothly.”

The adoption of ULSD and bio-blends has magnified the issues diesel boaters have been faced with for years ranging from decreased lubricity to increased risk for microbial growth. Boaters may notice increased filter turnover, hazy fuel, power loss, corrosion, and more soot and smoke being produced than in the past.  Much like the issues we see with gasoline engines, these problems can be easily countered with a preventative additive treatment.

“Biobor MD provides a wide range of components including a cetane improver for more efficient combustion, lubricity additive for decreased engine wear, a water dispersant, corrosion inhibitor, and also an anti-gel for improved cold weather operability,” states Kaker. “When used in conjunction with our diesel biocide Biobor JF to prevent microbial growth, boaters are able to combat the issues with today’s fuels in the marine environment and ensure their vessel is protected and operating at optimum performance.”

With the ever-evolving changes in fuel quality and engine regulations coupled with the increased performance of today’s engines, treating your gasoline and diesel with an industry tested additive package, such as those offered by Hammonds Fuel Additives, is a crucial part of operating and maintaining your marine engine.
